The World Health Organisation, WHO, has said 77 percent of women in Nigeria use skin-lightening products, the world’s highest percentage. The figure compares with 59 percent in Togo, and 27 percent in Senegal.
The WHO report said the reasons for this are varied but most people said they use skin-lighteners because they want “white skin”.
WHO also said skin bleaching comes with hazardous health consequences. The dangers associated with the use of toxic compounds for skin bleaching include, blood cancers such as leukemia and cancers of the liver and kidneys, as well as severe skin conditions. It said hardcore bleachers use illegal ointments containing toxins like mercury, a metal that blocks production of melanin, which gives the skin its colour, but can also be toxic.
The report said in many parts of Africa, lighter-skinned women are considered more beautiful and believed to be more successful and likely to find marriage. It also said it is not only women who are obsessed with bleaching their skins. Some men too are involved in the practice.
* In extreme cases of skin bleaching, the skin can become multi-coloured and marred with inflammation or scarring.
WHO investigation said lightening creams are not effectively regulated in Nigeria where even roadside vendors sell tubes and plastic bags of powders and ointments from cardboard boxes stacked along sidewalks in market districts. Many of the tubes are unlabelled as to their actual ingredients.
Qatar based Al Jazeera also reported that business is booming for shops selling skin-lightening products. A trader said, “About 90 percent of my clients come asking for skin whitening products,” adding “I sell it to them and give advice on what product is best for them and how to use them.

A Peruvian father faces allegations that he doused his son with gasoline and set him on fire after learning the 22-year-old was gay and HIV-positive.
According to the Peruvian daily newspaper La Región, Hitler Baneo Núñez, 49, allegedly tried to burn the victim (identified in reports only by his initials R.B.P.) alive after becoming tired of neighbor’s jokes about his son’s sexuality.
Though neighbors helped save R.B.P., the young man ended up with his face, arms and parts of his legs burnt, according to the report. Not only is R.B.P. HIV positive, he also reportedly has tuberculosis.
“My dad wanted to kill me because of those illnesses, but my aunt took me out of my father’s house and took me to Iquitos to put me in the institution ‘Algo bello para Dios’ since March 1,” the victim is quoted in reports translated by The Huffington Post as saying. “Unfortunately, my father doesn’t accept me as I am.”
A statement provided by local lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) advocacy organization Comunidad Homosexual de la Región Loreto (CHERL) and cited by BuzzFeed reads as follows:
“We hope that this complaint … will be treated seriously by the authorities and that it can generate a change and call attention of the public to the homophobia that lives inside the home and is growing in society towards gays, lesbians, bisexuals, and trans people in the Loreto region.”
Earlier this year, a young British man was convicted of manslaughter after killing a local gay teen by setting him on fire.
The BBC reports that 20-year-old Jordan Sheard has been sentenced to three and a half years in jail for the death of Steven Simpson after pleading guilty to manslaughter charges. Simpson, 18, died one day after sustaining “significant burns” in June 2012, according to the report.

A bra can be one of the most uncomfortable pieces of clothing that a woman wears. They pinch, they itch, and they are tight and confining. Oh, and don’t forget that they are impossible to get the right size! Some women wear them to bed even though they are so uncomfortable simply because they want to keep what they have on their chest as perky as possible. Marilyn Monroe slept with a bra on for this very reason.
New research shows that taking that bra off overnight can actually help you. The study was done over a span of 15 years, with 330 French women. The results found that wearing a bra does not prevent sagging or help to ease back pain any more than if you ran around with your bre@sts flopping about in your shirt. In fact, this cloth prison that you keep your bre@sts in may be doing more harm than good! The research showed that a bra may actually cause more sagging as your bre@sts are not meant to fight gravity.
In taking measurements during the research, they found out that not wearing a bra actually strengthens the muscles around the bre@sts and the nipples sat just a bit higher and were more proportionate. Some women should not go braless however as the deterioration of their muscles has already begun and there is nothing that can stop it other than plastic surgery.
Even though this study and its findings may have some people excited to take their bras off and burn them, most will not listen. Research has shown that a woman who doesn’t wear a bra to work will have a much smaller chance if any of becoming an executive in their company. The study only focused on 18-35 year olds as well, so they can’t see yet what their futures will be like.
